My name is Buddy and I am a16 year old Lab cross male dog. I have lived with Al for 15 years since he picked me at the pound. My health was very good until I was 13. I have developed IVD or Invertebral Disc Disease which means that somewhere there is spinal or nerve root compression.
There is probably degeneration of the disk material in my spine as well. This first shows as scuffing of the back paws and the occasional stumble and progresses to a point where I currently am. I have trouble standing up after sitting and can only handle 15 minute walks and I have the occasional nose dive. Al looks after me very well and I still enjoy life and don't have any pain but my mobility is severely reduced and Al and I have had to adapt a great deal in recent years.
I have the occasional accident when I don't realise I need to go outside. Al has bought me quite a few nice thick Canon bath towels to sit and sleep on and these seem to save any damage to Al's carpets. Dog Diapers also help if I cannot hold on. I still enjoy riding in the car but Al has to lift me in and out as I can't jump in and out any more. He has to be careful because I weigh 30KG or 66 pounds. You can buy dog ramps on the net to help here.
If your dog has similar problems or you are just after tips for helping your Senior Dog E-mail Al and he may be able to help.
